In a ceremony at Bangabhaban on Wednesday, Dr Abdullah Zafer H. bin Abiyah was officially accredited as the new Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Bangladesh.

He presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin, marking the formal start of his diplomatic tenure.

The credential ceremony, attended by senior officials from both nations, featured the traditional guard of honour by the President Guard Regiment.

President Shahabuddin welcomed Dr Bin Abiyah, expressing hopes that the renewed envoy would further deepen collaboration in trade, investment, and welfare of Bangladeshi expatriates in Saudi Arabia.

Dr Bin Abiyah highlighted Saudi Arabia’s continuing support for Bangladesh’s socioeconomic development, including contributions toward the country’s energy infrastructure and Rohingya refugee assistance—an extension of previous initiatives where Saudi funds and grants have expanded refugee facilities and basic services .

He reaffirmed the Kingdom’s interest in enhancing cooperation in areas such as labour migration, energy projects, Hajj and Umrah facilitation, and bilateral trade.

This transfer of responsibilities follows the tenure of Ambassador Essa Yousef Essa Alduhailan, who was honoured earlier in January 2025 with the Bangladesh Medal for Diplomatic Excellence.

That accolade recognised his efforts strengthening cooperation on labour rights, Hajj management, and Saudi investments in power, energy security, and infrastructure .

Bangladeshi‑Saudi relations, grounded in shared Islamic heritage and strategic economic partnership, have expanded significantly in recent years. Over 3 million Bangladeshis work in the Kingdom, sending remittances that play a vital role in Bangladesh’s economy.

Saudi Arabia has simultaneously increased investment in Bangladeshi sectors, notably infrastructure and renewable energy .
